The Boys star Erin Moriarty has publicly addressed the criticism she’s receiving for her apperance in the fifth and final season of the hit Prime Video series. Photos of Moriarty have been going viral on social media since season 5 premiered.

Erin Moriarty posted to Instagram this week with the most direct statement she’s made yet about the health crisis she was navigating while filming Season 5 — and the ignorance she’s encountered in its wake.

Posting a photo of an injured knee from her car, Moriarty wrote that Season 5 Episode 4 — which she called one of the most important episodes she’s ever shot — was filmed during the peak of her Graves’ disease symptoms before she had even received her diagnosis.

The Boys star Erin Moriarty shared a statement on social media about the criticism of her appearance

“okay, so: season 5, episode 4 of The Boys is one of the most important episodes I’ve ever shot. Unfortunately, that part of the season coincided with my health issues peaking before my diagnosis. I’m saving you the gnarly part of this picture but not long after this episode, I started to lose the ability to walk. The numbness in my feet led to a lot of falling. The night before we shot my segment of this episode, I fell and shredded up my knee,” Moriarty wrote on Instagram.

“I barely have any bts shots of this season, especially as things worsened. This isn’t a pity post. It’s mostly to say: fuck autoimmune disease. F— it so hard. Fuck the ignorance surrounding it, too. I can’t remedy that ignorance but not being outspoken about it occasionally, feels wrong.”

Grave’s disease is an autoimmune disease that causes the thyroid to overproduce hormones, with symptoms including weight fluctuation, eye changes, and altered facial appearance.
