Florida spearfisherman Matthew Piendak did not get injured during a recent shark attack off of the coast of Destin. He had to use his speargun to fight off three different predators in the Gulf of America.
His POV video of the dangerous encounter will make your palms sweat.
Fortunately, Piendak was able to prevent disaster during the Florida shark attack. The whole thing was captured on camera.
Matthew Piendak is not a stranger to deep waters.
Piendak, a well-adjusted resident of the Sunshine State, lives in Destin, Florida after growing up in Connecticut. He defines himself an “adventurer” who spends a lot of time in the water.
When he is not on land, you can typically find Matthew Piendak in search of his next catch.
He’s caught some monsters this year.
Rarely does he get back to land empty-handed. Most of his fish are caught on a spear.
Piendak (who is high-key jacked) is a scuba enthusiast.
You can normally find him deep under the water.
You can see more of Piendak’s lifestyle on his Instagram page. To say that he is living his best life in Florida would be an understatement. However, there is always danger lurking under the surface.
Florida man fends off (three) shark attack.
Piendak recently went for a dive in Destin. He was attacked by three different sharks on his safety stop. (A safety stop is a precautionary pause during a diver’s ascent to the surface that allows excess nitrogen to leave the body safely to reduce the risk of decompression sickness.)
Fortunately, Piendak had his speargun with him when the sharks attacked. It allowed him to fend off the sharks until the nearby boat was able to reach him and get him out of the water safely. He did not get injured. His POV video of the incident is insane.
I cannot say for certain, because I am by no means an expert on sharks, but the assailants appeared to be a trio of sandbar sharks. They are typically identified by the tall, triangular dorsal fins, broad rounded snouts and a stock, grey body. They are also super common in the northern Gulf, around Destin.
An adult sandbar shark (assuming that’s what they were) is fully capable of causing serious injuries like deep lacerations or damage to muscles, tendons and nerves. It could even be life-threatening if major blood vessels are impacted. Piendak got lucky!
