I couldn’t tell you how long it had been since I had remembered Fred Durst was a person who exists before I sat down to watch the HBO documentary recapping the unmitigated debacle that was Woodstock ’99 over the weekend.

I was slightly underwhelmed by a retrospective that felt fairly rush despite its close to two-hour runtime, but it still provided a fascinating look at the many factors that contributed to Woodstock ’99 devolving into the antithesis of the hallowed festival that had its legacy slightly tarnished by the gathering that took place 30 years later.

One of the biggest issues Woodstock ’99 faced was its decision to place acts like Korn, Kid Rock, and the Insane Clown Posse on the same ticket as Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow—the latter of whom implied organizers had no one to blame for themselves for catering to a primarily “young, white, male, frustrated, upper-middle-class” crowd with mentality she described as “I’ve been given everything and I’m still mad but I’m not really sure why I’m mad.”

That “aggro vibe” perfectly sums up the essence of Limp Bizkit, the band that somehow took America by storm in the 1990s—a time when a guy like Fred Durst could leverage a song like “Break Stuff” into international superstardom.

Durst isn’t exactly painted in the best light in the documentary, so while I can’t confirm he felt like he needed to do something to distract from it, I feel like it may have played a role in his decision to delete every post on Instagram before showing off his newest look.

If you showed that picture to 100 people on the street without any context and asked them to name the person, I have a hard time believing a single one would respond with “Fred Durst.” It did not take long for the internet to seize the opportunity to share who they think Durst actually looks like, and it has produced some Tremendous Content.

So what’s really going on here? Well, I can only assume Durst did this for some nookie-related reason, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
