Having played the character since the first X-Men back in the year 2000, Hugh Jackman is now the “world record holder” for the longest tenure in a superhero role. And that was the case BEFORE he decided to return for 2024’s Deadpool 3.

Set to don the iconic adamantium claws for yet another time in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Jackman has recently been discussing how the film will fit into the character’s overall arc, particularly considering the conclusive nature of 2017’s heralded Logan.

During a recent interview on the Empire Film Podcast, Jackman clarified that Deadpool 3 will (somehow) take place before the events of Logan (Deadpool 2, for what it’s worth, opens with a shot of a Wolverine action figure modeled after a scene from the movie).

“[Logan director James Mangold] was actually really cool about it… it wasn’t going to screw it [Logan] up, like claws coming out of the grave. So, he was relieved by that, and he totally got it, that it was a really good idea,” Jackman said when confirming the next Deadpool film will precede the events of Logan.

In a previous interview with SiriusXM a few weeks back, Jackman explained how that will be possible:

“It’s all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines,” Jackman said during a recent interview on SiriusXMwhen asked about how his return affects Logan.

“Now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So, I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.”

Deadpool 3, directed by Free Guy filmmaker Shawn Levy, is scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on November 8, 2024, during the MCU’s “Phase 5.”

Given that the film is still a few years away, casting and plot details have yet to be revealed. However, there has been speculation that Mobius M. Mobius, a fan-favorite character played by Owen Wilson that first starred in Loki, could have a significant part to play in the movie, which means that he and the Time Variance Authority — the MCU entity that monitors the endless multiversal timelines — are the “device” that Jackman is referring to.
