‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ And ‘The Last Man On Earth’ Canceled But An Insider Says Hulu Talks Already Happening

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

FOX TV / Collider

Yesterday afternoon was straight up miserable. My two favorite comedies on TV, The Last Man on Earth starring Will Forte and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were canceled. Both of those shows were supposedly on the bubble for their 4th and 5th seasons respectively so many suspected that FOX TV wouldn’t renew the shows for 5th and 6th seasons.

When the news broke that these two brilliantly shot, single-camera comedies were canceled Twitter was in an uproar. It didn’t take long at all before Brooklyn Nine-Nine was the #1 Twitter trend in the world despite Eurovision taking place which is the largest global TV event of the year even though it doesn’t even get aired in the US.

So what’s next? Hulu or TBS could step in and save one or both of these TV shows in a similar manner to The Mindy Project which was picked up by Hulu after FOX cancellation and ran for another three seasons.

An insider from Deadline even claims that Hulu talks have already happened:

While done at Fox, Brooklyn Nine-Nine may not be gone altogether. I hear that there had been incoming interest from other outlets about picking up the show starring Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher.
Hulu, Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s SVOD home, is considered the most likely choice, and I hear there had been conversations about the show moving there.
A Hulu deal would mirror the streaming platform’s pickup of another single-camera comedy, The Mindy Project, after its cancellation by Fox. Both Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mindy Project, which moved to Hulu after three seasons on Fox, are produced by Hulu corporate sibling Universal TV as well as 3 Arts Entertainment, so the companies have a deal template in place. Like The Mindy Project, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has a loyal, young audience that does most of their watching via streaming. (via)

My biggest problem with this report is that it focuses entirely on Brookly Nine-Nine and thus far all the speculation of The Last Man On Earth also getting picked up is nothing more than speculation. I was having trouble deciding which show I was more bent up over it getting canceled but ultimately I realized that each week I look forward to watching The Last Man On Earth more than any other show not named Game of Thrones. And this season left off on an unbelievably massive cliffhanger.

In a perfect world, both TV shows get renewed. But we know that it’s not a perfect world because FOX just canceled their two best comedies while bringing back some broke ass Tim Allen comedy that your parents didn’t watch but got angry about it getting canceled because someone somewhere told them it was about politics. Oh, and we’re on like the 17th season of Family Guy at this point, but weekly cartoons are cheap to produce so even if the ratings are low it’s worth it for FOX TV to keep dragging that out week after week.

Time to start paying for Hulu Plus and inject the tiniest bit of money into an media organization that has the chance to save some of the best show made in the past decade. In the meantime, here’s a karaoke video of Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis for all of you The Last Man on Earth fans out there:
