Everyone was blown away by Heath Ledger’s epic performance of The Joker back in 2008. Jared Leto gave a campy performance as The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad that only had a 28 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now we wait to see if Joaquin Phoenix can breathe new life into everybody’s favorite psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown. Phoenix will star as Arthur Fleck in the upcoming standalone The Joker movie.

Director Todd Phillips, of The Hangover, War Dogs, and Old School fame, shared a photo of a makeup-less Phoenix as the infamous Batman villain on his Instagram on Sunday with the caption: “Arthur.”

Sadly, the photo of Joaquin’s Clown Prince of Crime just kind of looks like Joaquin Phoenix. However, the internet delivered an image of what Joaquin would look like with clown face paint.

Production began this month in New York City. The Joker is scheduled to hit theaters in October 4, 2019, and will star Robert De Niro as a talk show host, Zazie Beetz as a romantic interest of The Joker, and Marc Maron.

Speaking of The Joker, no not Joaquin’s Joker, the other Joker, Jared Leto’s Joker. The script for Suicide Squad 2 was just completed. Co-screenwriter Todd Stashwick confirmed that the first draft of the script is finished. “We have finished our draft and I’m really proud of it,” Stashwick said. He added that the movie will be a true sequel and not a reboot or prequel.

Suicide Squad 2 will take place after Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey movie that stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, which could possibly be released in 2019. Robbie called the movie an “R-rated girl-gang film including Harley.”

“I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film,” Robbie said. “She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space.” After those two movies are completed, then DC Films will reportedly release another Joker standalone movie with Leto.
