Kevin Hart has made it clear he’s standing by Tony Hinchcliffe. The comedian appeared on The Breakfast Club this week to address the ongoing backlash surrounding Tony Hinchcliffe’s George Floyd joke at The Roast of Kevin Hart.

While Kevin Hart acknowledged the joke landed poorly with his own community, he did not take any responsibility for its presence in the roast. The Roast of Kevin Hart also included performances from Shane Gillis, Pete Davidson, Chelsea Handler, Draymond Green, Regina Hall, The Rock, Sheryl Underwood, Jeff Ross, Big Jay Oakerson, Na’im Lynnand and more.

Kevin Hart defended Tony Hinchcliffe’s set at his Netflix roast and said that the comedian is not racist

“Yeah, the George Floyd joke, it wasn’t a tasteful joke to our culture, to our audience… It wasn’t a tasteful joke to us. We didn’t like it,” Hart said. “My last note to all attached to this is very simple — remove me from it, I didn’t say it. Stop talking as if I said it. I didn’t disrespect the family. Get off my back.”

Hart also defended Hinchcliffe, saying the comedian is not racist and delivered one of the strongest sets of the night.

“If you’re watching the roast you get why they’re doing it. You get why the racial humor is on the table — that’s what they do. Go look at the Tom Brady one. It happens every year when they do a roast. It’s not new.”

In the wake of the roast, Hinchcliffe has been called out by George Floyd’s brother Terrence, Chelsea Handler, Michael Che, D.L. Hughley, Stephen Jackson, and Tamika Mallory — all of whom have placed at least partial responsibility on Hart for what happened at his own event. A petition calling for Netflix to donate the proceeds of the event to George Floyd’s foundation also racked up over 10,000 signatures.
