Kraft Mac & Cheese is perfect if you want a low-effort, hearty meal. The instructions on how to cook it are pretty straightforward, but one TikToker was left shocked after discovering that she missed a crucial step in making the food.
In a video that has garnered 2.8 million views, TikToker Amber (@amberlinaosv) shared footage of her mac and cheese in the pan while holding Kraft’s iconic blue box, which was zoomed in to the prep instructions.
The written instructions were as follows: “6 cups of water, 4 tablespoons of butter/margarine, and 1/4 cup of milk.”
“Yall did you know that… who actually puts four tablespoons of butter in one box of macaroni?” she asked. “I gotta know.”
Meanwhile, on-screen text read: “There’s no freaking way someone does this.”
Given that Kraft Mac & Cheese has released some truly cursed products in the past, including a mac and cheese ice cream and a pumpkin-spice version of the meal, a buttery mac and cheese feels tame by comparison.
BroBible reached out to Amber and Kraft via Instagram direct message and email, respectively.
What Did Commenters Think?
However, it’s safe to say that most commenters weren’t in agreement with Amber.
“4 tablespoons isn’t even that much butter,” one wrote. “What?”
“4 tablespoons?” a second asked. “That’s just madness. Gotta put the whole stick.”
“Don’t ever invite me over for dinner,” a third said.
And a fourth quipped, “Who reads the instructions to make mac and cheese?”
Meanwhile, a fifth commenter added, “Babe, you’re making boxed Mac n cheese, you’re no better than the rest of us lol.”
In response to this comment, Amber said, “Girl I didn’t say I was better or worse. I just asked a question. The fact this dang internet went wild over butter and Kraft is wackkkkk.”
Several Follow-Ups
After her video went viral, Amber posted multiple follow-ups. One remarked at how she “set the internet on fire” following her post. A second refused to be apologetic for her “lightly buttered” mac and cheese. In a third, she admitted that “the internet may convince [her]” to follow the box’s instructions. Meanwhile, a fourth highlighted that the official Kraft account commented on her TikTok.
In a fifth video, she expressed her shock at the discovery that some people put mayonnaise in their mac and cheese. Her sixth and seventh videos featured more bowls of mac and cheese, and in her final one, she wrote, “The amount of comments I got that said something along the lines of “the instructions say to,” like, for real bro. When’s the last time you read the directions on something? Certainly know y’all ain’t out here measuring exact butter and milk for a box of Kraft.”
What If You Want Kraft Mac & Cheese Without The Butter?
Over on Reddit, one user was on the same page as the TikToker, as they insisted that the Kraft Mac & Cheese tastes better without butter.
“I always hear people taking their Kraft Mac & Cheese very seriously and insist that the creamier it is, the better,” they wrote. “I strongly disagree.
If it’s a really gourmet Mac & Cheese, them I love it to be really creamy, but when it’s Kraft, I think it should be made as dry as possible.”
The flavor is so much more concentrated if you don’t make the cheese soup that the box recommends, plus it’s less fattening since you’re not using the insane amount of butter that’s recommended.”
“Really, don’t knock it til you try it,” they concluded. “I normally would think that food opinions wouldn’t really being here, but because of how defensive people get about Mac & Cheese, I think it’s appropriate.”
Meanwhile, Food Republic has a number of suggestions of what you can substitute butter with in boxed mac and cheese. The site’s suggestions include Greek yogurt, crème fraîche, sour cream, labneh, buttermilk, Greek-style dairy-free yogurts, cream cheese, or cottage cheese.
@amberlinaosv Okay but this can’t be real? Is it though. #kraftmacandcheese #kraft #ilovekraftmacandcheese #thatsalotofbutter #isthisreal
