Mariah Carey Must Be Stopped After Declaring Christmas Season Starts At Midnight On November 1st

Most people are familiar with the idea of “Christmas Creep,” a phenomenon that can be largely traced back to brands and retailers who’ve gotten increasingly liberal with the concept of the “holiday season” by prematurely rolling out festive commercials and store displays. Now, they’ve found an ally in the form of Mariah Carey—and it’s time for the world to take a stand.

There isn’t a single song in the Modern Christmas Music Canon that has come close to matching the stranglehold “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has had on our ears since Mariah Carey dropped it on an unsuspecting world in 1994.

There’s a reason the tune has gone platinum a whopping 12 times in the United States alone: it’s an absolute banger, and the fact that it topped the Billboard Hot 100 last December (close to 20 years after its initial release) is a testament to the staying power of the track.

It’s also hard to blame Mariah for doing everything in her power to squeeze as much money as she possibly can out of her biggest hit, but with that said, it seems like she’s getting a bit too greedy.

If you suddenly jolted up in bed when the clock struck midnight to officially bring Halloween to an end but weren’t sure why you suddenly sensed a disturbance in the universe, there’s a good chance it stemmed from the video Carey posted at 12 A.M. on November 1st where she declared “It’s Time.”

Again, I can’t knock the hustle, but I would like to humbly argue it is not, in fact, time.

I love the Christmas season as much as the next guy, but at some point, we need to draw the line.

I’m of the opinion the day after Thanksgiving should mark the unofficial start of the holiday season, and while I can understand why people want to jump the gun when it falls near the end of November, you’ll have a full month to get your Christmas on this year when you consider Turkey Day will be celebrated on the 23rd.

I’d even go as far as to say it would be fair to permit a one-week grace period for people who need to get their Christmas fix in the middle of November, although I still think that’s a bit much.

However, counting down the seconds until the start of November is like standing outside of a liquor store in the morning waiting for it to open: if you find yourself in that position, there’s a good chance you have a problem that needs to be addressed.
