While tons of stories and anecdotes about the late Matthew Perry have been flooding the internet in the days since his untimely passing, the one that perhaps best summarizes who he was comes courtesy of the man himself.

Given the seemingly everlasting success of the beloved NBC sitcom Friends, many will likely remember Perry for playing Chandler Bing on the show from 1996 to 2004.

Perry, however, had a different performance in mind when he was once asked what his most “treasured role” was, and that was playing a character named Alex Whitman in the 1997 rom-com Fools Rush In alongside the one and only Salma Hayek.

“I did a movie that I love called Fools Rush In with Salma Hayek — that was probably my best movie,” Perry said on Instagram when asked if playing Chandler was his “most treasured role.”

Released in 1997, Fools Rush In can currently be streamed for free on Tubi and on Prime Video if you have a subscription.

Jon Tenney, Carlos Gómez, Tomas Milian, Siobhan Fallon, John Bennett Perry, Stanley DeSantis, Anne Betancourt, Suzanne Snyder, and Jill Clayburgh also starred in the film.

You can check out both the official synopsis and trailer for Fools Rush In, directed by Hitch filmmaker Andy Tennant, below.

“After a one night stand with Alex, Isabel realizes that she is pregnant and they decide to get married. However, along with the marriage comes compromise of one’s own cultural traditions.”

Perry passed away at the age of 54 years old on Saturday, October 28, after he was reportedly found unresponsive in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home.

While Perry’s official cause of death has yet to be determined, authorities have already reported that no foul play is suspected at this time. Prior to his death, Perry was extremely open about his struggles with substance addiction, even releasing his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir just last year.

Our thoughts go out to Perry’s family, friends, fans, and loved ones during this difficult time.
