Maury Povich Will Come Out Of Retirement To Determine If Matthew McConaughey And Woody Harrelson Are Brothers

Earlier this year, we brought you the story that new facts may suggest that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson aren’t just buddies, but maybe actually brothers.

During an interview on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, McConaughey revealed that his mother once implied that she slept with Woody Harrelson’s father (a contract killer who was convicted of assassinating a federal judge, by the way).

“In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W,” the Academy Award winner said.

“We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that his dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce. Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment.”

Clearly not prepared to let go of that anecdote, the folks over at E! News, interviewing McConaughey about his new children’s book Just Because, not only dug the idea of them being related back up but looped in Maury Povich, who said he’d come out of retirement to do his whole “Who’s the father” shtick.

“I just heard about the possibilities. I mean, Matthew, I don’t know you. Woody, you’re my pal, but guess what? I would come out of retirement! We could do prime-time DNA: Maury’s back with Woody and Matthew. I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair. Woody’s got my number. I’m ready!” Maury, who retired in 2022, says in the video.

The video itself is actually quite cringe-inducing, especially when you consider that McConaughey specifically said in that very same Kelly Ripa interview that he’s hesitant to get a DNA test because he does not want to find out his father isn’t actually his dad.

“He’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?” he said.

Whether they’re actually related or not, the pair will be working together again in the coming years as they’ll be starring as themselves in a 10-episode half-hour comedy series on AppleTV+ that will follow the pair as their two families attempt to live together on McConaughey’s Texas ranch.
