  • Mike McCarthy addressed the Cowboys’ bizarre decision to run a QB draw with time running out.
  • The Cowboys head coach said the team “shouldn’t” have had any issues spiking the ball.
  • Dallas ultimately lost to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 23-17.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy used his postgame press conference to address the situation that occurred at the end of the game, which saw one of the refs bundle into Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ center as time was running out.

“Do you want to be running a Hail Mary from the 50-yard line or run five verticals from the 25-yard line?” McCarthy said of the decision to call a quarterback draw with just 14 seconds left on the clock.

“That’s the decision. It’s the right decision. It’s just like anything — the execution between us and the official spotting the ball obviously wasn’t, you know… we shouldn’t of had any problem getting the ball spotted. Is that the quote you’re looking for?”

“I’ve never seen that come down the way it came down as far as the collision between the umpire and the quarterback,” McCarthy told reporters after the game. “We were trying to get inside the 30-yard-line to set up the last play.

In addition to his comments about the communication between Dak Prescott and the ref, ESPN’s Ed Werder also reported that McCarthy — who was reportedly coaching for his job — claimed he was “told the New York review [at the NFL league offices] was likely to put more time on the clock.”

“The mechanics were in-tact and I felt from our end of it, the communication I was given on the sideline was that they were reviewing it and they were going to put time back on the clock. The next thing I know they’re running off the field,” McCarthy stated.

With their victory over Prescott, McCarthy, and the Dallas Cowboys, the Jimmy Garoppolo-led San Francisco 49ers will head up to the frozen tundra to take on Aaron Rodgers and the top-seeded Green Bay Packers. Elsewhere in the NFC, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take on the winner of Monday night’s game between the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals, which will conclude Super Wild Card Weekend.

Over in the AFC, the top-seeded Tenessee Titans will host Joe Burrow and the upstart Cincinnati Bengals, while the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending AFC champions, will host the Buffalo Bills.
