Sony Pictures
- Morbius currently has a 17% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
- The film is wildly successful in one sense, though: it’s become a viral meme.
- Due to this, Sony has decided to re-release the movie in theaters.
Proving that there is truly no limit to which meme culture can bleed into real life, reports indicate that Sony Pictures will be re-releasing Morbius in 1,000 theaters across the country due to the popularity of the viral meme.
Sony is re-releasing Morbius in theaters, apparently due to the popularity of the meme
Although we don’t have exact numbers, we can confirm through a trawl of Fandango that the Jared Leto-starring film has been booked for one or two showings a day in major movie markets across the United States for the next week, starting on Friday, June 3—despite the fact that, per Box Office Mojo, it was down to just 83 screens total over Memorial Day weekend, bringing in a paltry $35,360 in the process. [via AV Club]
Made for about $75 million, Morbius has grossed $163 million at the global box office so far, which is objectively abysmal for a major studio superhero project. For comparison, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made an estimated $185 million DOMESTICALLY in its *opening weekend* alone.
Granted, while it’s not quite a fair fight for The Human Doctor Formerly Known As Michael Morbius, it still highlights the extent to which the MCU dwarfs whatever the hell it is they’re trying to do over at Sony. If Sony’s next two Spidey spinoffs, Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter, which are both set to release next year, are also misfires, then I think that might be the last nail in the coffin for the Morbiusverse (that’s not what it’s actually called, but it should be).
