New ‘Mad Max’ Film Set To Begin Filming Next Year, Anya Taylor-Joy In Talks To Star

Warner Bros.

While our current global situation has put Hollywood on hold for the time being, as the saying goes, the show must go on, and that’s exactly what’s happening as studios big and small continue to chart a course for the coming year.

In a piece released last night, Variety detailed how productions — such as The Batman and Mission Impossible 7 — are coping with our current predicament. And in that report, there appears to be a nugget about the future of the Mad Max franchise.

According to the report, director George Miller is eyeing Split and Emma star Anya Taylor-Joy for the role of a young Furiosa and hopes to begin filming next year.

Development slates at the studios are also in flux. Most executives don’t expect things to get back to normal for several weeks, though a few are taking video and phone meetings as they try to game out films they hope to greenlight in the next 12 months. Director George Miller, for instance, has been meeting with names including Anya Taylor-Joy for his “Furiousa” spin-off, which he hopes to start shooting in 2021.

Of course, Miller is making concessions to coronavirus — those auditions have taken place via Skype. [via Variety]

Ever since Mad Max: Fury Road debuted back in 2015, a Furiosa spin-off has constantly been discussed as Miller’s next project set in that universe. Ever since breaking through with The Witch back in 2015, Taylor-Joy has become one of the fastest-rising and most-sought-after actresses in Hollywood. Her next film, The New Mutants, was scheduled to be released next month but has obviously been delayed.
