‘Ozark’ Is Smashing Streaming Records Left And Right, Has Racked Up Bigger Numbers Than ‘Squid Game’

'Ozark' Has Racked Up Bigger Numbers Than 'Squid Game' At Its Peak

Netflix

  • Ozark has become one of the biggest hits in the history of Netflix.
  • The Jason Bateman-starring series is racking up streaming numbers bigger than Squid Game.
  • The second half of Ozark‘s fourth and final season will hit the streaming service on April 29.

I know that a show has become a series hit when my retired parents become hooked on it. That’s how I know something has truly broken through the noise and reached a pop-cultural status that few programs achieve. In fact, due to my job, I get screeners of Netflix series such as Ozark a few weeks early and I remember my parents practically begging me for my Netflix login so they could tune in, too.

That’s obviously all anecdotal evidence of Ozark’s massive success, which is now backed up by stonecold analytical evidence that illustrates just how big of a hit the series has become since debuting back in 2017.

Ozark, whose fourth season just debuted its first batch of episodes on Netflix, recorded the fourth-highest weekly tally ever to repeat atop Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings.

During the week of January 24 to 30, the crime thriller series collected almost 4.1 billion minutes of streaming across its 37 episodes. That tally trails only Tiger King, which erupted with debut weeks of 5.3 billion and 4.4 billion minutes in March 2020. Ozark, during that same early-Covid timeframe when overall streaming was exploding due to pandemic lockdowns, racked up 5.2 billion minutes. [via Deadline]

For context, Ozark — whose fourth season premiered on January 21 — pulled in 4.1 billion minutes viewed from January 24 to January 30. During the peak of Squid Game mania, the series had a high of 3.2 billion minutes viewed, according to Nielsen.

Just this week, it was announced that the second part of Ozark‘s fourth and final season will hit Netflix on April 29. We had the pleasure of speaking with Alfonso Herrera, who plays the season’s main villain Javi to scene-stealing effect, ahead of the season four premiere, so make sure to check that out.
