An all-time great sit-in went down on the first night of Phish’s four-night run in Riveria Maya, Mexico. After a one-set show, Dave Matthews joined the band for a three-song encore.
“Dave Matthews, our friend. Welcome!” Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio announced to the vacationing crowd. “Just come down here and never leave… I recommend that.”
Together with Dave, Phish played two classics from the Dave Matthews Band songbook: “So Damn Lucky”, followed by a beautiful version of “The Maker”. To close the show, the band launched into a scorching “Tweezer Reprise” with Dave on the stage, hammering away on acoustic.
It’s a fun moment of worlds colliding: Many-a millennial and Gen X generation Phish fan, including myself, have started their musical journies in life as Dave Matthews Band fans. I guess it’s just a ’90s thing.
Phish x Dave Matthews: A brief history
Dave Matthews and Trey have collaborated on a number of projects over the years. In 2003, Trey was credited by Matthews on a solo album Some Devil. You can hear Trey’s distinct guitar tone throughout the album, including on “So Damn Lucky”.
In 2004, the two traveled to Senegal to meet the legendary Senegalese Band Orchestra Baobab. A documentary of the cross-cultural musical adventure was captured by VH1 for a 44-minute special, dubbed Dave Matthews and Trey Anastasio Go to Africa. It’s currently available to watch on YouTube. In 2006, Dave Matthews was flanked by Trey, Bob Weir, and other musicians to form “Dave Matthews and Friends” on a Dave Matthews-themed cruise ship.
Despite plenty of musical and cultural overlap, this is actually the first time Dave Matthews joined Phish on stage in over two decades.
The last time Dave Matthews joined Phish on stage was on June 17th, 1995 at Nissan Pavillion in Virginia (now known as Jiffy Lube Live). Dave and the late, great DMB saxophonist Leroi Moore joined the band to play the Bob Marley song “Three Little Birds”.
Previously, on April 21st, 1994, Dave Matthews Band joined Phish in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to play “All Along The Watchtower.”
In December 2003, Dave and Trey performed the “Three Little Birds” again together at the Hartford Civic Center.
Phish x Dave Matthews In Mexico
Just a couple of days ago, on Sunday, February 20th, 2022, Trey joined Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds on stage at Moon Palace Resort. To cap off the Dave Matthews destination event in Mexico, they performed Phish’s “Waste” and the Dave Matthews song “Everyday”. The same stage is hosting Phish this weekend.
This is marked the second time the two friends have collaborated in Mexico. On February 16th, 2020, Trey joined Dave and Tim for “Waste” and “Bathtub Gin” before calling it a weekend.
