Taking on a mythic creature as infamous as the Boogeyman is a daunting task in and of itself. Making a movie based on Stephen King’s 1973 version iconic 1973 version is another challenge entirely.

And yet, despite barely being 30 years old at the time and having never made a studio film of this scale before, filmmaker Rob Savage did exactly that and then some.

Prior to directing The Boogeyman, Savage was known for his work on films such as Strings (2012), Host (2020), Dashcam (2021), and a bevy of short films that were released between 2009 and 2017. He has also directed episodes of TV shows such as True Horror, Brittania, and Soulmates.

Speaking to BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast ahead of the release of The Boogeyman on digital and Blu-ray (on October 10), Savage told us about wrestling with the idea of monsters being real, researching boogeymen across various cultures, his four favorite horror movies, how horror has become so profitable in the streaming era, and more.

One question that I’ve been obsessed with asking horror directors recently is how the growing acknowledgment of the existence of UFOs has changed their perceptions of the creatures and monsters that were so long presented to us as solely myth.

Savage gave me one of my favorite answers yet, explaining that — like in The Boogeyman — it’s almost scarier when these horrors exist in the space between reality and fantasy.
