Most of us have opened a canned drink and started sipping from it without giving it much thought. While we can’t see the contents inside, we rarely have a reason to doubt it’s anything but what’s on the package.
Once in a while, though, something happens that makes customers want to always cut open a can to make sure nothing that shouldn’t be there is lurking inside.
That kind of event took place recently, according to a woman who was enjoying her Starbucks Doubleshot Energy Coffee Vanilla, when something prompted her to cut open the can.
What Was Inside The Starbucks Coffee Can?
TikTok user Tjayne (@taylor0427) posted a video opening the can in real time. “Dude, this is so nasty,” she says.
Someone in the back says, “Literally, just try to drink your energy drink, open it this morning, hoping you can get some nice energy.”
Tjayne looks inside the can now that it’s cut open, and is shocked. “Oh, that’s so big,” she says.
She shows the contents to the camera, and there’s clearly a mouse inside the Starbucks can.
Then, she proceeds to dump the remaining liquid in the sink, revealing more concerning details. “That’s poop, that’s freaking poop,” she alleges, observing some small brown pieces among the coffee drink.
Eventually, the women dump the mouse onto a paper towel and immediately get sick and run off the frame. “Shut up, shut up, shut up,” Tjayne says. “This is so nasty.”
In an email to BroBible, a North America Coffee Partnership spokesperson from PepsiCo said, “We take product quality and safety extremely seriously, and our manufacturing process includes multiple safeguards designed to prevent foreign material from entering sealed containers. We are in contact with the consumer and conducting a thorough investigation.”
Commenters Are Horrified
In the comments section, viewers couldn’t believe what they were looking at.
“AND U DRINK HALF OF IT,” one stated.
“PLEASE SUE IMMEDIATELY U HAVE A CASE FR,” advised another.
“How does this even happen?” asked a third.
“This isn’t just Starbucks, this is very common with other cans like these,” chimed in a fourth. “Please dont drink anything that you can’t see.”
Has This Ever Happened Before?
While rare, similar cases have been documented before.
Just last week, at the time of publication, a news station in Virginia reported a customer finding a dead mouse inside an energy drink.
Other customers have shared similar experiences on Reddit, TikTok, and more.
It’s unclear how mice end up inside soda cans, but it’s generally believed to happen during packaging, before the cans are sealed.
There have also been lawsuits stemming from incidents like these. For example, in 2012, a man sued PepsiCo after finding a dead mouse inside a can of Mountain Dew.
The case was eventually settled after PepsiCo suggested the man may have tampered with the product, arguing that the soda would have dissolved the mouse between packaging and the time the customer opened it.
Another Michigan woman sued Monster Energy after she, too, claimed she found a dead mouse inside her canned drink, but the company denied any wrongdoing. A lawyer representing the company stated, according to CBS News, “Strict manufacturing processes and technology make it impossible for a mouse to be sealed inside a Monster Energy drink. The lawsuit is frivolous, and Monster Energy looks forward to, once again, exposing this hoax.”
