Texas Woman Gets ‘Hooked Up’ With New Lay’s Flavor By Dollar General Employee. Then She Opens The Bag: ‘Sooo Do It Taste Like Steak Orrrrrr’

Lay’s dropped a whole lineup of new World Cup-inspired flavors this spring. While in the past they’ve been praised for getting hyper-specific flavors into chip form, it seems they’ve lost their magic.

One avid fan seems to think they’re just being lazy with the flavor formulations.

Are These Chips Different?

In a TikTok with more than 395,000 views, content creator Gina Montana (@theginamontana) called out one of her favorite chip brands.

“Either there’s a f— up in the factory or Lay’s played in my mother——- face,” Montana starts.

Montana explains that her roommate works at Dollar General and had been hooking her up with new product drops as soon as they came out, like the new Lay’s Argentinian-Style Steak with Chimichurri flavor that’s part of Lay’s FIFA World Cup 2026 collaboration.

She was excited about the new flavor, especially since she self-describes as a “Lay’s b—- down,” and the flavor sounded good.

But when she opened the bag, she says they looked a little too familiar and tasted that way, too. Holding up the new chip next to a sour cream and onion chip for comparison, she says they looked identical—same color, same dark seasoning specks.

“This is a sour cream and onion chip. I’m not stupid. I’m a lot of things in this world, but a dumb b—- ain’t one of them.”

She doesn’t stop there. The Wavy French Onion Soup tastes like barbecue. The Brazilian Garlic Sauce was just plain nasty.

“Lay’s, do better. Because what the f— was that?” she questions.

What Are These New Lay’s Flavors?

The chips Gina was testing are part of a huge limited-edition rollout tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to the Takeout, Lay’s—an official sponsor of the World Cup—is releasing 40 globally-inspired flavors across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Americans get three: Argentinian-Style Steak with Chimichurri, Brazilian-Style Garlic Sauce, and Wavy French Onion Soup.

The steak and chimichurri flavor is described as a blend of cilantro, lemon, basil, bay, thyme, oregano, parsley, and garlic—with beef fat in the ingredients to give it that seared-steak finish. The Takeout actually gave it a reasonably positive review, noting the chimichurri profile came through with genuine herby, garlicky flavor and a subtle steak finish on the back end.

The Kitchn had a more mixed take across the lineup. Their team found the French Onion Soup flavor underwhelming, calling it “slightly cheesy and oniony, but the flavor could have been punchier,” one tester said.

The Brazilian Garlic Sauce, meant to evoke molho de alho (a creamy Brazilian condiment made with garlic, butter, mayo, and lemon), fared better, with that being a few team members’ favorite.

The flavors are available at select retailers now through the World Cup this summer, with the U.S. getting its three varieties in early May.
