Even though he’s been working on science fiction movies for over a decade and spent much of that developing his new film The Creator, even Rogue One director Gareth Edwards cannot believe how artificial intelligence has exploded in recent years.

In this exclusive clip about the making of The Creator, Edwards — who has also directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla, and Monsters — says that when he began to develop the film, artificial intelligence was nowhere near as prevalent as it is today.

“The movie was originally made as an allegory for things that are different from us — ‘the other’. But weirdly, as we were making this film, AI has gotten better and better. And it feels like we’re at that tipping point now where it’s here — the Pandora’s box has been opened,” Edwards explains.

Here is the official synopsis for The Creator, courtesy of 20th Century Studios:

Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (John David Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself.

Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

The Creator, which stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, and Allison Janney, is now available to purchase on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and digital platforms.
