Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland recently said he’s taking a year off of acting.

The reaction from movie fans, however, likely isn’t the one Holland is expecting, as many of the reactions have ranged from “When did he start acting?” to “Tell your agent to take a year off, too.”

“I’m no stranger to hard work,” Holland said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I’ve lived by the idea that hard work is good work. Then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where I needed a break and disappeared and went to Mexico for a week and had time on a beach and laid low. I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was. I am excited to see how it turns out. I feel like our hard work wasn’t in vain.”

The jokes about Holland’s career come as his latest non-Spider-Man outing, the AppleTV+ series The Crowded Room, is just the latest of his projects to feature wildly poor reviews.

At the time of this writing, The Crowded Room has an abysmal 8% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, which comes off the heels of Uncharted‘s 41%, Chaos Walking‘s 21%, and Cherry’s 7%. Not counting Marvel movies or animated movies, the best-reviewed project that Holland has featured in is 2020’s The Devil All The Time, which has a 64% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As a result of his, Holland’s stock is perhaps as low as it’s been since he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has likely led to the jokes about his acting hiatus.

Here is the official synopsis for The Crowded Room, by the way, in case the awful reviews actually serve to pique your interest.

In Manhattan in the summer of 1979, a young man is arrested for a shocking crime, and an unlikely investigator must solve the mystery behind it before the true criminal strikes again.

Given that the next Avengers film — the suddenly tumultuous and Jonathan Majors-starring Avengers: The Kang Dynasty — set to hit theaters in 2025, it makes sense that Holland is trying to take some time off now ahead of when production on that, and its 2026 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars, begins.

At this time, the 27-year-old Englishman is not currently attached to any other upcoming projects in an official capacity.
