It’s been over 30 years since Tom Cruise flew onto screens and serenaded his way into our hearts in Top Gun, a movie that simultaneously set the standard for cinematic dogfights, shirtless volleyball matches, and Kenny Loggins songs. A lot has changed in the past three decades with the exception of Cruise, who has swapped a portrait of himself for Scientology when he decided to become the real-world Dorian Gray.

In most cases, making a sequel to a movie more than three decades after it came out would seem like a shameless cash grab, but I’m more than willing to make an exception for Top Gun. Cruise started teasing a follow-up to the original last year— which will be dubbed Top Gun: Maverick— and based on his recent social media posts, our dreams of a sequel just came one step closer to becoming a reality.

According to Variety, the actor confirmed the start of filming on the sequel with an Instagram post featuring Maverick back in his signature flight suit.

According to previously released detailsTop Gun: Maverick will follow the life of the son of Goose as he follows in the footsteps of his mustachioed father, which makes it sound a lot like the Creed movies if the Creed movies involved less punching and more shooting MiGs (or whatever our enemies are flying these days) out of the sky.

The movie will mirror the military’s modern-day pivot to drone fighting, allowing Maverick to take on the classic role of a grizzled veteran becoming slowly obsolete in front of his eyes.

Now all we have to do is wait and hope the Top Gun sequel isn’t the cinematic equivalent of a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit.
