44 People Injured After Wave Pool Unleashes Tsunami That Wipes Out Amusement Park Goers

It’s summer, it’s hot, it’s sticky. You want to cool down from the oppressive heat so you visit an amusement park because it has water rides, a lazy river and a wave pool. The perfect way to cool down for people who don’t have a beach, lake or pool nearby. The next thing you know, you’re getting crushed by a monster wave and then being taken to the hospital for your injuries. Welcome to China!

We take you to the Yulong Shuiyun Water Amusement Park in the northern Chinese city of Longjing near the border with North Korea. That is where a wave pool machine went haywire and injured 44 people on Tuesday.

The “tsunami pool” lived up to its billing by delivering a powerful 10-foot-high wave that obliterated people floating in the artificial shoreline. The tidal wave was so large that water spilled over the barriers of the pool. But why is there a setting to deliver a neck-snapping, kid-tossing tsunami wave on people at a water park?

“Alright, everybody out of the pool!”

There were rumors that the “operator got drunk and turned the wave magnitude to maximum level,” but the water park said that the wave pool malfunctioned after an “accidental breakdown in machinery.”

The 44 people injured suffered fractured ribs, broken bones, and serious abrasions. Five people were still being treated in hospital for their injuries from the water park located in the Yulong Bay Scenic Area.

The theme park closed down the tsunami pool while they investigate the accident at the tidal wave pool, but has since reopened. “The park closed for a day for repairs, but the investigation is over and the park will open as usual tomorrow,” the park said.

You have to appreciate China’s love of dangerous wave pools and their blatant disregard for safety.

American wave pools are so puny.
