After a critically-acclaimed wildly successful first season that saw Watchmen become HBO’s most popular new series since Westworld, HBO has announced that the network will not be pursuing a second season.

According to a report from USA TODAY, Casey Bloys — HBO’s Chief of Programming — said that the network will not be making a second season of the beloved superhero drama, largely due to the fact that series creator Damon Lindelof is not interested.

“It’s really in Damon’s thinking about what he wants to do. If there’s an idea that excited him about another season, another installment, maybe like a ‘Fargo,’ ‘True Detective’ (anthology) take on it, or if he wants to do something different altogether. We’re very proud of ‘Watchmen,’ but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do,” Bloys told USA Today.

Unfortunately for fans of the series, USA TODAY also spoke to Lindelof — the mind behind other massive television hits such as Lost and The Leftovers — who said that he’s told the story he wanted to tell and will be moving on.

Lindelof told USA TODAY this week that he’s told the story he wants to tell and has no interest in a second season, though he’s “given my blessing” to HBO should it want to pursue a new installment with another writer-producer.

But Bloys concedes that’s unlikely to happen: “It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way.”

Despite the fact that I was a huge fan of the series, given the nature of its source material, Watchmen’s one-season run provides a fitting end to what amounted to a sequel to the original revered graphic novel.
