Back in the mid-1990s, a 1940s-style revival overtook the country.
Swing music. Swing music. Swing music songs were the most popular tunes of the day.
Weird, man. So fucking weird. They made a whole movie sort-of about it (Swingers, which was about love, but they also went to a swing show at one point).
Anyhow, we’d all forgotten about it, but a friend of mine tweeted this today.
When you think about, that’s kinda fucked up.
But it also reminded me that if we forget history, we are doomed to repeat it. So, in an effort to prevent a similar, pin-striped craze retaking the nation in 2045 or some shit, here are five songs from five of the biggest swing bands of the mid-1990s.
Listen to them, then feel shame for being a person who lived through that decade.
Cherry Poppin Daddies — Zoot Suit Riot
Squirrel Nut Zippers — Suits Are Picking Up The Bill
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy — You Me and the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight
The Brian Setzer Orchestra – Jump Jive An’ Wail
Royal Crown Revue – Hey Pachuco
Fun fact: this last one was on the soundtrack for The Mask. The 90s were a fucked up time.
