2019 GMC Sierra is not just a big, beautiful pickup truck. This wonderfully crafted hunk of steel is also an innovative vehicle that is the first pickup truck with a carbon fiber bed. The brand new Sierra also has an ingenious tailgate that is a work of ingenuity.

GM revealed the redesigned Sierra this week, only months after they revealed the 2019 version of the Chevrolet Silverado, which is their sister truck. The 2019 GMC Siera will take aim the best-selling Ford F-150 with innovation and thinking outside the box.

The high-end 2019 GMC Sierra Denali is the first pickup truck with a carbon fiber bed. The thin, yet durable carbon fiber bed is lighter and stronger than the standard steel box. The carbon fiber bed is 64 pounds lighter in a material that GMC calls “CarbonPro.” GMC says the carbon fiber bed offers “best-in-class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance, making it the most durable pickup box in the segment.”

The truck will also have a Swiss Army knife-like tailgate that boasts six different functions. GMC calls the tricked-out tailgate a “MutliPro Tailgate” and it folds out into six separate positions for various tasks and purposes. You can adjust the tailgate to become steps to climb into the bed (and there’s even a handle that swings out so you can pull yourself into the truck), a panel that folds down to make it easier to reach into the bed, a shelf that creates a two-level cargo space, a cargo stop that prevents loads from spilling out, and it even folds out to become a workbench. The MultiPro Tailgate will be standard on the SLT and Denali models.

The 2019 GMC Sierra features a steel frame and the cab is bigger than last year’s model. Inside the cab, the rear seats of the crew cab models have storage bins hidden in the back cushions that are big enough to hold a laptop. The Sierra has some high-tech features including a head-up display, a birds-eye view 360-degree camera system, a video rearview mirror with tilt and zoom functionality, and a new infotainment system that is faster and has a “smartphone-like… intuitive interface.” The Sierra also has adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency brakes. Under the hood, the Sierra offers 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines, or an inline-6-cylinder Duramax diesel. The 2019 Sierra is expected to go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year.
