VideoLAN started their VLC player as an academic project in 1996, but now it is one of the most popular and best free media players you can get across most platforms. The nonprofit organization from France has now improved upon their already impressive video player by adding a slew of new features including support for 4K, 8K, HDR, and even Chromecast streaming. Watching pirated movies has never looked so good.

On Friday, VideoLAN introduced VLC 3.0 “Vetinari” for most platforms, including macOS, iOS, and tvOS. VLC 3.0 added a ton of new improvements for their latest update including automatic hardware decoding for 4K and 8K playback, support for 10-bit HDR, 360-degree video, and 3D audio. The new media player can even fully support Chromecast streaming. VLC 3.0 can even maximize Chromecast videos that aren’t natively supported by Chromecast.

Other new VLC Vetinari features include a simplified preferences window, redesigned and resizable fullscreen controller, Blu-Ray Java menus, new status bar icon which displays metadata and play controls, support for browsing NAS drives, and support for keyboard backlight dimming during video playback. The new version is even optimized for the iPhone X and can work around the phone’s notch. VLC 3.0, which VideoLAN has been working on since June of 2016, is a free download from the VideoLAN website. VLC 3.0 is available on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.
