Florida Woman Comes Across ‘Cute’ Turtle. Then She Sees What’s Walking Toward Her: ‘Why Is There A Whole Zoo On Your Daily Walk’

When a Florida woman spotted a tiny turtle making its way down a path, she pulled out her phone to capture what she thought would be a cute wildlife moment. Then she looked up. Walking toward her from the opposite direction was a much larger reptile: an alligator.

The unexpected encounter has since racked up 4.5 million views on TikTok, with viewers equally entertained by Cristina’s increasingly panicked reaction and baffled by just how much wildlife she apparently encounters on an ordinary walk.

The video, overlaid with text reading: “When you think you are about to take a cute aesthetic video of a turtle,” begins innocently enough, with the turtle trotting along a path in what appears to be a residential complex.

“Oh my gosh,” Cristina coos from behind the camera. But then, her tone rapidly changes, as the camera jerks up to show a gator approaching from the other side.

“OH MY GOD,” she says, before repeating the statement multiple times.

“Hello?” she asks, her camera pointed at the reptile. “Oh my gosh. What the f—?”

“Oh my god guys what the f—?” she reiterates.

The gator then appears to walk into the grassy area as Cristina, the TikToker, admits: “I’ve never seen this before.” Then, the gator approaches the pond before enveloping itself in the water, with its scales poking out from the top.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting the video to get this much attention! I was originally recording the little turtle because I thought it was cute, and then I looked up and saw this huge alligator walking toward me,” Cristina said in an email statement to BroBible.

“It completely caught me off guard, and my reaction in the video was 100% genuine. I’m glad everyone has gotten such a kick out of it!”

Viewers Have A Lot Of Questions About Florida

Commenters couldn’t believe it.

“What are we supposed to do when we see a gator? Get big? Run? Play dead? Whisper ‘What the f—?’ I NEED ANSWERS” one wrote.

“Wait so in Florida those animals are just loose anywhere?” a second asked.

“Those itty bitty apartment ponds should not have gators in them,” a third remarked.

While a fourth joked: “Girl the turtle set you up they work together.”

But What Happened To The Turtle?

In a follow-up video, Cristina returns to the residential area, where she finds that same turtle hiding in its shell.

“Why is he just sitting there?” she asks. “Oh, he’s like hiding. How cute. Hi. No alligator this time.”

Accompanying the video is on-screen text that says: “Guys, Charlie is fine.”

Alligator Encounters Aren’t Exactly Rare In Florida

Florida seems to be the prime destination for alligators these days. This is for several reasons. Firstly, the warm climate and plentiful wetlands in Florida—most notably the Everglades—make it the ideal habitat for the reptiles.

Secondly, alligators have a lot of legal protection in the state. After a century of overhunting, the 1973 Endangered Species Act banned all alligator hunting. It also stopped the commercial trading of alligator products, which reduced the incentive to hunt them. This allowed the species to bounce back.

Today, alligator hunting is highly regulated in Florida. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, there are 1.25 million gators in the state.

That sheer number is probably why gators keep popping up on golf courses and, in one rare case, someone’s swimming pool.
