Capt. Chris Mowad and his crew fishing onboard the Best Trait out of Orange Beach, Alabama have set a new fishing record for the largest blue marlin ever caught in the Gulf of Mexico when they reeled in a 1,145-pound grander blue marlin.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime catch. The 1,145-pound blue marlin is a pending record for both the largest blue ever caught in the Gulf of Mexico and, by extension, and Alabama state fishing record.

The current Alabama state fishing record for blue marlin is an 851.9-pound fish caught by angler Ginger Ann Myers who was fishing out of Sunset, Alabama on 7/5/20. Earlier this year, a 776.4-pound blue marlin was caught during the Orange Beach Billfish Classic Tournament which set a tournament record. So anglers have known for months there are some BIG FISH around.

1,145-Pound Blue Marlin Sets Gulf of Mexico And Alabama State Fishing Record

Look at this behemoth:

The fishing world is showering Captain Chris Mowad and his crew onboard the Best Trait with congratulations after they landed and weighed this ‘grander‘ 1,145-pound blue marlin and set a new Gulf of Mexico record in the process:

A Gulf of Mexico Fishing Record? What Does That Even Mean?

When we say this is the biggest blue marlin ever caught in the Gulf of Mexico in addition to being a state record in Alabama, it’s encompassing of every piece of land that touches the Gulf.

So this is the biggest blue marlin ever caught on the West Coast of Florida, in Cuba, Mexico, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. State fishing records are awesome but there’s something about this being a proper Gulf of Mexico Fishing Record that makes it that much cooler.

‘Granders’ have been caught with less frequency over the past several years. Not just in the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere in the United States, but fewer ‘grander’ blue marlins have been reported in the past several years compared to when I first started writing about them years ago here at BroBible.

The last one I wrote about here was a 1,128-pound blue marlin caught in the Cook Islands. Not only was it the largest fish (of any species) caught in the Cook Islands it was also caught by an angler who was fishing by himself.
