Following the Denver Broncos’ nauseating Thursday Night Football loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL world has been coming down *hard* on quarterback Russell Wilson, who already seems to be wearing thin on the Mile High City after just about a quarter of the season completed.
From football fans wondering if last night’s disaster was the worst NFL game of all time to NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt crushing the signal-caller for being an inauthentic “poser” to fans leaving the stadium while the game is still tied, Wilson has been on the receiving end of heavy criticism and will likely continue to be until he turns his play around.
To be fair, while a lot of people are reveling in Wilson’s poor play because they simply don’t like his personality (which, to be fair, is understandable), the fact is that the stats also back up the notion that the former Seahawks signal caller, who signed a $245 million deal upon his arrival in Denver, is underperforming this year.
At the start of Week 5, there are 21 NFL quarterbacks that have higher Quarterbacks Ratings than Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson
As things currently stand through the beginning of Week 5, there are 21 NFL QBs with higher QBRs (quarterback ratings) than the 33-year-old, including the likes of Carson Wentz, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota. Here’s the full list of current QBRs in the NFL, courtesy of ESPN (I’ll also bolden the ones that make Wilson look particularly bad):
- Tua Tagovailoa
- Patrick Mahomes
- Lamar Jackson
- Josh Allen
- Cooper Rush
- Trevor Lawrence
- Jalen Hurts
- Jared Goff
- Jacoby Brissett
- Geno Smith
- Justin Herbert
- Derek Carr
- Marcus Mariota
- Matthew Stafford
- Tom Brady
- Joe Burrow
- Ryan Tannehill
- Kirk Cousins
- Aaron Rodgers
- Kyler Murray
- Carson Wentz
- Russell Wilson
- Mitch Trubisky
- Daniel Jones
- Matt Ryan
- Mac Jones
- Jameis Winston
- Davis Mills
- Joe Flacco
- Justin Fields
- Baker Mayfield
- *The San Francisco 49ers QBs (the injured Trey Lance and recently-installed Jimmy Garoppolo) apparently haven’t registered enough data to be ranked on ESPN yet
The fact that Wilson finds himself smack dab in the middle of QBs like Wentz, Trubisky, and Jones should really tell you all you need to know about the former Super Bowl winner’s on-field play thus far this season.
Luckily for both the Broncos and their fans, the team doesn’t play for another 11 days as their next game is a Monday Night Football matchup against their AFC West rivals, the Los Angeles Chargers.
