Could former two-division champion Amanda Nunes return to the UFC?

Nunes shocked the UFC world when retired in June of 2023 after a bantamweight title defense against Irene Aldana. She vacated both the bantamweight and featherweight belts.

But now it appears a comeback could be on the horizon after Nunes teased as much with a Twitter video on Saturday night.

Nunes posted the video following Kayla Harrison’s dominant victory in her debut both in the UFC and at bantamweight.

Harrison called out several fighters and mentioned her goal of becoming a champion in her postfight speech. But she didn’t mention Nunes, and the legendary former champion made note of that.

Nunes was originally supposed to fight Julianna Pena at 289. She and Pena had split two prior fights. But Pena pulled out due to injury and Nunes then retired.

“Of course she’s gonna retire when she knows she’s got to fight me — of course,” Pena said of Nunes’ retirement while she was sitting ringside. “Don’t compare yourself to Anderson Silva! Do not compare yourself to Anderson Silva. Shut up! Boo! You suck!”

Nunes responded by doubling down on retirement and throwing shade at the rest of the division.

“No, I’m going to have my belt at home with me,” Nunes said at the post-fight press conference. “That’s going to be the fake one. It’s going to be fake forever. Whoever gets the belt now, it’s going to be just, like, pretending to have it. So I’m gone. I’m good. I did everything, all is taken care of in my life.

“Thank you to the UFC, they really took care of me and they’re always going to take care of me. So I’m going to be around here. If I don’t do anything, I’m still going to go up and down just to be around, because I love this sport so much and I did everything to be the best. And I proved it tonight. I retired with my two belts.”

But that was before Harrison, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo, was in the UFC.

Now that she’s here, might Nunes reverse course?
