In 2005, David Stern made some major waves when he instituted a league-wide dress code in an attempt to clean up the NBA’s image and caught a fair amount of heat from people —including Allen Iverson and Paul Pierce—who asserted the new regulations had racist undertones, as the list banned items that are often associated with urban culture, including durags, oversized chains, and Timberlands.

The move wasn’t entirely without precedent, as other leagues and plenty of coaches around the world of sports already had policies in place requiring players to wear a suit and tie on gamedays, and the controversy would eventually die down and usher in a new era where plenty of athletes apportion some of their gigantic salaries to hiring stylists and filling their closet with sartorial items.

LeBron James turned some heads a couple of years ago when he arrived at an NBA Finals game rocking a suit with shorts and a complementary man purse and Dwyane Wade had a long and storied history of sporting some absolutely outrageous ‘fits over the course of his career.

Players in other leagues have also gotten in on the action, including some guys in the NFL who have to follow a fairly broad dress code that instructs them to adhere to “an appearance that is appropriate to representing their individual clubs and the [league].”

There is perhaps no player who has garnered more attention with his style choices than Cam Newton, who was once benched at the start of a game in 2016 after his outfit was found in violation of the Panthers dress code. However, he’s just one of many athletes in the NFL who’s jumped aboard the bandwagon.

Earlier this week, ex-NFLer Andrew Hawkins posted an incredibly on-point video on Twitter where he parodied some of the popular fashion trends and pregame threads of players including Newton, Travis Kelce, and Russell Wilson.

The video eventually came to the attention of Wilson, who seemed to appreciate Hawkins’ lighthearted jab.

I guess if I got a glow-up by marrying Ciara, I’d be more than happy to laugh at myself too.
