Delaware State officially named former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson as its head football coach on Dec. 27. He immediately started building a formidable college football roster in his first week in the new role and landed a high-profile commitment from the son of Antonio Gates to begin the new year!

The Hornets have already added sixth transfers, including two former Power Four conference players.

Antonio Gates Jr. is the son of four-time First-Team All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates, who played 16 years with the Chargers. He was a four-star prospect in the college football recruiting Class of 2022.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound wide receiver had 23 scholarship offers from schools like Arkansas, Penn State, Ohio State, Florida, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Tennessee and West Virginia, among others. Michigan ultimately received his commitment. Gates Jr. decided to stay close to home.

However, his two seasons in East Lansing did not go as planned. Gates caught only nine total passes for 131 yards and one touchdown but he showed flashes of elite athleticism whenever the Spartans threw his way. Take the spring game for example:

Gates also made a great adjustment to haul in the lone touchdown of his collegiate career thus far.

Things did not work out at Michigan State. Gates decided to enter the transfer portal at the end of his true sophomore season. He formally committed to Delaware State on New Year’s Day.

Gates is going to play for one of the best college pass-catchers of all-time and one of the best NFL wide receivers of the 2010s. The Hornets are going to get him the ball at every opportunity because he is already DeSean Jackson’s best offensive weapon before he even steps foot on campus in Dover.

It will be interesting to see whether Antonio Gates Jr. will finish out his three remaining years of eligibility at Delaware State. Perhaps his goal is to go ball out on the FCS level and transfer back up. We shall see!
