Anyone who’s seen The Lord of the Rings movies knows New Zealand is home to plenty of snow-covered peaks, and while the country boasts its fair share of mountain resorts, their relatively isolated nature (and the abundance of more accessible—and warmer—outdoor activities its residents can opt for) means it’s never exactly been a hotbed when it comes to producing Olympians in winter sports.
New Zealand sent its first representatives to the Winter Olympics when a team of alpine skiers was dispatched to Oslo in 1952, but heading into the 2022 Games in Beijing, Kiwis had only managed to bring home a total of three medals—one silver and two bronze—over the course of the 16 competitions where a delegation previously made the trek.
Over the weekend, that number rose to four courtesy of 20-year-old snowboarder Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, who secured the top spot on the podium in women’s slopestyle and became the first athlete to win a gold medal while representing New Zealand at the Winter Games.

Sadowski-Synnott honed her skills on the slope in the resort town of Wanaka, and a news crew was tasked with making the trek there and interviewing her father Sean in the wake of her win—who quickly went viral after a clip of him cussing up a storm after presumably housing a bottle of celebratory champagne appeared online.

According to The New York Post, Zoi seemed to agree he’d probably “had a few too many drinks” by the time he was asked for his reaction, but added “you can’t really blame him”—and when you consider the circumstances, I can’t imagine many people would disagree.
