Think You Could Beat This 81-Year-Old Grandmother’s Beer Mile Time?

Well, you probably could. But you still shouldn’t let that underscore the fact that somewhere out there, an 81-year-old grandmother is spending her days training for and competing in Beer Mile events, because that’s just awesome.

If you ever needed some motivation to get back into running, this is probably the best I can offer.

From Runner’s World:

Elvira Montes doesn’t even like beer. She prefers Scotch—Chivas Regal to be exact. But on Tuesday night in Austin, Texas, the 81-year-old grandmother of three from Fort Worth put her beverage predilections aside, cracked open a KCCO Gold Lager from Resignation Brewery, and began to chug.

Montes was the oldest finisher of the 2015 FloTrack Beer Mile World Championships. She slurped four 12-ounce beers—one before each quarter-mile lap—in 20:24.

“I should have been a little faster,” Montes told Runner’s World, disappointed in her chugging performance. “I tried to drink the first one really fast but I couldn’t. The second one went down really smooth; the third, even better. The fourth was alright.”

So what if it took her more than 20 minutes to complete the Beer Mile!? She’s 81-years-old for Christ’s sake! I’m more impressed that she could even throw down four beers in the time frame, let alone put a mile under her feet, too. Especially when plenty of geriatrics her age can’t even walk without assistance.

And Elvira Montes’ heart for competition is clearly second to none. Saying her fourth beer was just “alright” because she knows she could’ve done a little better and maybe broken the 20:00 mark. Totally savage. As were her motives, training regiment and post-race celebrations.

“I don’t have any secrets, I just wanted to prove to my daughter that I could run and drink beer,” Montes said.

Montes also set a personal best on Tuesday night.

“I was just so happy to finish,” she said the day after, while waiting for a flight back to Fort Worth. “I feel great.”

Montes promised to make a return appearance next year and hopes to break 20 minutes. To train, she plans to drink a beer while on the treadmill.

But, after crossing the finish line with a mile in her legs and four beers in her stomach, Montes was not thinking about her next race. She was ready to celebrate. So, she took her daughter to Hooters. They had chicken wings and Scotch.

Beer Miles, Hooters chicken wings and Scotch. Keeps the body feelin’ young, evidently.
