Michigan received some bad news regarding star running back Blake Corum’s knee injury on Thursday. The talented rusher will miss the rest of the season, severely impacting the team’s chances of winning both a conference and national championship.

Corum ran for 1,463 yards this year, becoming one of the Wolverines’ most dynamic players on offense. He helped pace a rushing attack that ranked fifth in the nation in production while finding the endzone 18 times and tallying eight 100-yard games.

The back suffered a knee injury against Illinois that limited him in the season finale versus archrival Ohio State. Corum saw just two touches totaling six yards in that rivalry matchup. The hope was that he’d be able to recover in time to face Purdue in the Big Ten Championship Game, but those hopes have been dashed.

Ian Rapoport broke the news Thursday afternoon that Corum would be sidelined for the remainder of the season as he plans to get knee surgery.

Michigan star RB Blake Corum is expected to have knee surgery and is out for the season. The Heisman candidate should make a full recovery. He tried to play last week vs. Ohio State but his knee made it impossible.

The report is crushing not only for the conference title chances, but also for the fact that Corum won’t be able to play in the College Football Playoff. While the offense should be able to take care of business versus the Boilermakers this Saturday, the task will be more difficult against a team like Georgia.

The good news for the Wolverines is that Corum’s absence in last weekend’s win over Ohio State didn’t slow the offense down. Michigan opened up the passing game by throwing for 278 yards and reserve rusher Donovan Edwards broke off late runs of 75 and 85 yards to seal the 45-23 victory.

UM will look to keep that success going as it pursues its first national championship since 1997.
