Thomas Castellanos’s split with Boston College last season was not pretty. He’s somehow made things worse after moving onto a new school.
The former starting quarterback is making headlines following his midseason benching by the Eagles. Not even former teammates appear to be safe from criticism.
Castellanos transferred into Boston College after spending a season at Central Florida. In Year 1, he threw for 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions under center while averaging 173 passing yards per game.
He looked to build upon that foundation in 2024, but his season was cut short. New coach Bill O’Brien benched midway through the year. Castellanos responded by going dark on social media and quitting the football team.
After entering the transfer portal, he landed at ACC rival Florida State. He’s now on a mission to rebuild his image following the demotion.
This offseason, he sat down with On3 Sports to talk about the year to come. He opened up on his tenuous exit from Boston College and what he expects to see moving forward with the Seminoles. He’s ruffled feathers in the process.
Thomas Castellanos threw his old team under the bus after being benched.
The quarterback partially blamed his struggles and ensuing exit on his relationship with Bill O’Brien. He didn’t feel valued after giving a year and a half to the program.
“Bill O’Brien and I butted heads early in the season. I got banged up a few games. We had a meeting, and it kind of blew up in my face. I did so much for that program, and I just wasn’t repaid the right way.”
-Thomas Castellanos
He later threw his entire team under the bus by minimizing their contributions while attempting to highlight his own accomplishment.
“I feel like I tore the ACC up by my damn self for the last two years, and now I’m with a squad. I hope people don’t think that Florida State is going to be the same team it was last year because we have weapons. People can’t just sit back in zone coverage and watch me.”
-Thomas Castellanos
Castellanos’s definition of “tore the ACC up” might differ from most, but he does have talent. Implying that he played with no help from competent teammates surely isn’t a way to mend his relationship with his former school, though.
The quote caught the attention of Boston College football players. Cameron Martinez responded online.
Mm that ain’t how I remember it 🤔🤣 https://t.co/2sI7fw5oSX

“That ain’t how I remember it,” the defensive back said in a post on X. He clearly took offense to the insinuation that Castellanos was the only player of worth on the team.
The quarterback’s now added former teammates to his list of adversaries after previously taking aim at future foe Alabama. “I just don’t see them stopping me,” he said in a preseason warning to the Crimson Tide. He’s certainly not lacking confidence!
The “squad” that Thomas Castellanos now takes over at Florida State is looking to rebound from a two-win season. The Seminoles won’t play the Eagles unless the teams match up in the ACC Championship Game.
