Brian Flores is not letting the narrative around his relationship with Tua Tagovailoa stand as is. The 40-year-old former head coach is vehemently denying any sort of beef between the two.

Earlier this year, after Flores was fired as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, reports began to surface out of Florida. Many of them did not paint him or his former franchise quarterback in a good light.

One of the reports said that Flores had a problem with Tagovailoa’s work ethic during game weeks. Another said that the two got into a profane-filled shouting match during the season.

Flores denies any such rift.

The former Dolphins head coach recently joined the ‘I Am Athlete’ podcast with Chad Johnson, Omar Kelly and Brandon Marshall and said that any reports of tension between him and Tagovailoa are not true.

“I think we had a good relationship. It was a player-coach relationship. And I think in a relationship like that, the coach challenges the player, and often times the player challenges the coach.”

He also added, that “there was a great deal of respect between the two of us. So you hear this crazy kind of narrative that’s out there, but this is a young man who works, developed, and got better over 2 years and I think he’s got a bright future.”

Flores and Tagovailoa missed out on the playoffs in 2021. After going 1-7, Miami won eight of its last nine games, which led most people to believe that Flores would keep his job.

However, despite the late-season success, Flores was fired. Many believe that the decision came because of the reported friction between the head coach and his quarterback, whom the Dolphins drafted No. 5 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Flores doesn’t really care what people thinks, he knows the truth.

“Yeah, the world can think what they want to think,” he said. “Ask Tua, you know, I think he’d say the same thing.”
