Cam Skattebo returned to the starting lineup for the New York Giants on Sunday. However, was flagged for “lowering his helmet” and penalized for unnecessary roughness during the first quarter.
He was not happy!
The second-year NFL running back yelled at the officials from the sideline. The coaching staff had to walk him back to the bench to avoid an additional penalty.
Cam Skattebo is out of the dog house.
Jim Harbaugh decided to teach his star running back a lesson during last week’s loss to the New Orleans Saints. Cam Skattebo had some trouble with fumbles during the first few games of the season. His role was decreased as a punishment.
Skattebo took full responsibility for the silent benching after he did not receive a single carry. DraftKings chose not to refund any of his bets because, even though he did not run the ball even one time, he played.
Sunday was a different story. Skattebo was back in the lineup and received five touches on the first drive. That was one more than Tyrone Tracy Jr. He took back the lead role in the backfield!
Unfortunately, the NFL decided to punish him further for running how he always runs — hard into contact.
The New York Giants running back was penalized for lowering his helmet.
Although this kind of unnecessary roughness penalty is not super common in the National Football League, it is not unheard of. However, the penalty is typically called on the defender. The rules prohibit any player from lowering his head to initiate contact with his helmet against an opponent anywhere on the field. It results in a 15-yard personal foul and an automatic first down if committed by the defense, and the player can be ejected if the action is deemed flagrant and avoidable.
“It is a foul if a player: (a) lowers his head and makes forcible contact with his helmet against an opponent; or (b) uses any part of his helmet or facemask to butt or make forcible contact to an opponent’s head or neck area. These provisions do not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or the helmet in the course of a conventional tackle or block on an opponent.”
Rarely is the penalty called on the offensive player. That is especially for a running back like Cam Skattebo, who seems to seek contact every time he gets the ball. He could be flagged for “lowering his helmet” on nearly every run.
And yet, Skattebo was not called for a penalty on the first 185 carries of his career. Only the 186th.
The 5-foot-11, 215-pound running back ran right up the middle for a gain of ~8 yards. Houston Texans safety M.J. Stewart tried to get downfield to make the tackle and got run over.

Skattebo was fired up about the run until he noticed the penalty flag on the field. The officials called him for unnecessary roughness because he lowered his helmet to initiate contact. He was gave them a piece of his mind from the sideline!

If Skattebo was flagged for “lowering his helmet” on that run, he should probably be flagged for “lowering his helmet” on every run. That kind of contact is a big part of the game…
