Cameron Flukey decided to enter the transfer portal prior to his final season of college baseball. However, the (now former) Coastal Carolina ace will likely hear his name called in the first round of the MLB Draft next month.

What does this latest announcement mean for his professional baseball career? Probably nothing.

Unless there is a college baseball program that is willing to pay him the equivalent of a signing bonus, Flukey’s entry into the portal seems like a leverage play. I would be shocked if he throws another pitch in college but stranger things have happened.

Who is Cameron Flukey?

At 6-foot-6, 210 pounds, Flukey has the ideal frame for a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. The New Jersey-native projected as a 5th to 7th round draft pick out high school but went undrafted due to signability issues. He had already committed to Coastal Carolina. He was going to play college baseball.

His decision paid off. Flukey blossomed into a certified Friday star during three years in Conway and 2025 was a breakout year.

The sophomore starter finished with a 3.19 ERA in 101 innings with 118 strikeouts against only 24 walks. There was a lot of hype!

His fastball has touched 98 miles per hour and typically sits in the mid-90s. His secondary pitch, a 12-6 curveball, generates a lot of swings-and-misses against college hitters. He is also working to improve his slider and changeup.

Unfortunately, a rib injury kept Cameron Flukey to only 24 innings in 2026. Fortunately, he picked right back up where he left off once he returned to the mound. The 21-year-old ace finished with 31 strikeouts against nine walks and three home runs.

Most MLB analysts consider Flukey to be a top-25 prospect in the upcoming MLB Draft. He has been linked to the Cubs at 23, Reds at 18, Angels at 12, Marlins at 14, Astros at 12, Tigers at 22, Diamondbacks at 15 and Rangers at 16.

Flukey would likely be picked inside of the top 10 if he was healthy and pitched a full season in 2026. Because that was not the case, his name could be called anywhere between picks 10-23. It depends on who is willing to bite and when.

Why did he enter the college baseball transfer portal?

It was announced on Monday that Cameron Flukey entered the transfer portal with a ‘Do Not Contact’ tag. That typically means that an athlete already has a preferred destination in mind. He already knows where he is going to transfer.

South Carolina recently hired Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and Schnall brought his entire coaching staff with him. It would make a lot of sense if Flukey transferred from Coastal Carolina to South Carolina to join his head coach in the SEC.

However, this transfer portal entry feels more like an insurance policy that can also be used as leverage.

Flukey can tell MLB teams that he is willing to stay in college for another season if they don’t draft him when he expects to be drafted. He can fall back on his final year of collegiate eligibility if things don’t go according to plan.

And maybe Flukey does end up playing another season in South Carolina. I don’t think so. His expected signing bonus will likely fall somewhere between the $3.5-$5.5 million range depending on his exact draft position. I highly doubt there is a college program that is willing to match that number in NIL.
