WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert was asked a standard question about her future at the league and chose to make it about gender. Engelbert’s response has since blown up in her face.
At the 2026 WNBA Draft, a reporter referenced NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s recent uncertainty about his own plans and asked Engelbert about her tenure, and responded by saying to the reporter: “I wonder whether you would ask that of a man.”
“I do crack up how everybody’s focused on me, and you should be focused on the hundreds of amazing women and thousands of women who run this league outside of myself,” Engelbert replied.
“I appreciate that you’re focused on me as well. I wonder whether you would ask that of a man, by the way, but I realize as women we get asked different questions than men do. But look, I’m so proud of this league and what we’ve built. There’s nothing else to report on that. There’s no story there. My focus is on continuing to build a sustainable model for the league as we head into our 30th season.”
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert blasted for pulling the gender card after being asked a routine question about her future in the league
Engelbert’s response was swiftly and widely blasted on social media, with sports fans noting that male sports commissioners are asked these sorts of questions all the time.
This not what she thought it was. Folks say Adam Silver needs to kill himself everyday on this app LMAOO https://t.co/gzepUWJCVB

Male pro sports commissioners get asked questions about their future all the time. Totally valid question — and a fascinating, super-defensive response. https://t.co/2Dvj7kPnDO

“Gary Bettman gets asked this question so often that he’s taken to preemptively answering it before it’s asked,” one fan said.
“Rodger Goodell is boo’d on national tv every single year during the draft. People hate that man on an intense level Cathy can barely understand,” a second added.
“I wish I could call Adam Silver every night to ask him this,” a third joked.
Even Jemele Hill, who virtually never turns down a chance to wade into race and gender debates, didn’t have Engelbert’s back.

While Engelbert pivoted to talking about the league’s women owners, GMs, coaches, and staff, and affirmed her focus on building a sustainable model for the WNBA’s 30th season, the damage of her viral response was already done, mounting further pressure on the embattled GM.
