Fresh off the news that Drew Brees is joining NBC Sports when he retires – and probably replace Cris Collinsworth in the Sunday night booth – CBS Sports is doing a little shuffling of their own.

Media reporter Andrew Marchand of the New York Post is reporting that CBS released longtime analyst Dan Fouts. Fouts’ contract expired at the end of this season but CBS Sports decided to sack the former San Diego Chargers quarterback early.

A few names were rumored to be Fouts’ replacement with the number 2 broadcast team. Those voices considered in the booth with Ian Eagle included Trent Green, Rich Gannon, and James Lofton.

According to Marchand, CBS already has a replacement in mind. The network is going to replace Fouts with Charles Davis, an NFL analyst on Fox.

Davis and CBS have apparently reached a verbal agreement on the deal. No official contract has been signed, per the report.

If CBS keeps the same pairings from the 2019 season but replaces Fouts with Davis, the announce teams for the 2020 season would be:

  • Jim Nantz/Tony Romo//Tracy Wolfson
  • Ian Eagle/Charles Davis//Evan Washburn
  • Greg Gumbel/Trent Green//Melanie Collins
  • Kevin Harlan/Rich Gannon
  • Andrew Catalon/James Lofton
  • Spero Dedes/Adam Archuleta
  • Tom McCarthy/Jay Feely
  • Beth Mowins/Tiki Barber

Davis’ job at Fox was in limbo because of tight end Greg Olsen. If Olsen opts for retirement, he’ll likely join the Fox NFL family.

The biggest offseason move still belongs to CBS, who inked Tony Romo to the biggest analyst deal in history.

While Fouts might be done with CBS, he still could land at another network. The 69-year-old Hall of Famer has an impressive resume that includes a stint on “Monday Night Football” and college football announcing.
