After former running back LeSean McCoy questioned his ability to be a successful coordinator and/or head coach, former Kansas City Chiefs star Jamaal Charles has come to the defense of his former coach Eric Bieniemy.

Taking to Twitter to respond to McCoy’s comments about Bieniemy on Fox Sports 1’s Speak For Yourself, Charles said that he not only learned a lot from Bieniemy’s coaching but that he’s a great husband and father who deserves a head coaching gig.

Charles wasn’t the only one to call out McCoy for his comments, as now-Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill also weighed in.

Prior to serving as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Bieniemy was the team’s running backs coach from 2013 to 2017. McCoy played with the Chiefs during the 2019 season and racked up 101 carries for 465 yards and four touchdowns.

The debate around Bieniemy comes after the 53-year-old offensive coordinator made a seemingly lateral move, as he took the offensive coordinator job with the Washington Commanders after serving in that same role for the Chiefs since 2018.

Bieniemy will certainly have his work cut out for him in Washington, as the Commanders are reportedly planning on heading into next season with second-year QB Sam Howell as their starter.

Howell did show some promise in his brief NFL action last season, as the University of North Carolina product completed 11 of 19 passes for 169 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.

The Commanders, however, find themselves in a division where the other three teams they’re competing against — the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Giants — all made the playoffs last year.
