It’s been a problem for them all year, but Sunday’s dismal offensive performance by the Kansas City Chiefs further highlighted the team’s need for major help at wide receiver.

The Chiefs lost 24-9 to the Broncos, a team they had defeated sixteen consecutive times. And, once again, the receivers struggled.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is still the league’s best pass-catcher at the position, and has been very productive this year. He led the team with six catches for 58 yards on the day.

But, despite 38 attempts from Patrick Mahomes, only Rashee Rice had more than two catches as a wide receiver, as he had four grabs for 54 yards. He’s leading all Chiefs wide receivers with just thirty catches in eight games this year. The next closest is Marquez Valdes-Scantling with 19. That’s not good, to say the least.

The defending Super Bowl champs can absolutely win another one this year. They still have the league’s best head coach, quarterback and tight end. And, the defense has been magnificent this year. But, they need to get Mahomes another reliable weapon in the pass game. The team did make a move for former Chief Mecole Hardman, but he’s not a difference maker by any stretch of the imagination.

So, who is available, or could become available before the trade deadline, which is 4PM ET on Tuesday? Here are five.

  1. Arizona Cardinals WR Marquise Brown

  2. New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard

  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans

  4. Carolina Panthers WR Adam Thielen

  5. Tennessee Titans WR DeAndre Hopkins

There are some two great players in here, two pretty good players in here, and one who is solid when healthy. All five of them would help the Chiefs immensely, as they would instantly become his top target, other than Shepard. Evans, Hopkins, Thielen, and Brown would really elevate that offense, for different reasons. Brown would give Mahomes a bona fide deep threat, and Chiefs fans would be hoping he could turn him into the next Tyreek Hill. The other three are reliable targets all over the field and are more traditional wideouts.

Regardless of who they trade for, the Chiefs must address the wide receiver position at the deadline.
