Christian Pulisic had a disappointing 2026 World Cup

While there is plenty of blame to go around for the United States men’s national team’s embarrassing 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup, Christian Pulisic seems to be drawing particular ire from the US soccer community.

Despite being the face of the USMNT for a handful of years now, Christian Pulisic was a no-show against Belgium and during the 2026 World Cup in general. With this latest loss, Pulisic’s USMNT career thus far is now being put under the microscope.

Stats such as Pulisic leaving injured in three of the seven World Cup games he’s started, having one goal in eight World Cup matches, and being part of the infamous 2018 failed World Cup qualification are being specifically positioned as evidence that Pulisic has not delivered to the level that his status as the team’s star player suggests he should. Pulisic’s lone World Cup goal came in the group stage of the 2022 tournament when he scored the opener in a group stage match against Iran.

USMNT fans placed a ton of blame at the feet of Christian Pulisic after the United States’ loss to Belgium

In the first half, Pulisic lost possession 11 times, which was the most of any player on the field. He was then taken off around the 60th minute with an injury that many US soccer fans believe he should have played through.

The backlash directed in Pulisic’s direction after the USMNT’s loss to Belgium was swift and widespread, with many lamenting that his status as “Captain America” has not been backed up on the pitch. Not just in this World Cup, either, but in his larger USMNT career.

“Pulisic skipped the Gold Cup—much to the dismay of many current & former teammates & his coach—to be “best ready” for the World Cup. He then went 6 months without scoring before the World Cup & then in the 5 games of the World Cup he missed one & left two early with injury,” FS1’s Nick Wright tweeted.

“Imagine if Christian Pulisic was half as good as he and the American media thinks he is,” another viral tweet read.

“They wasted 60 minutes with Pulisic on the pitch. It is what it is. The guys not a good player, he’s not a star, he’s a mid level nobody in Serie A. Zero heart, always hurt,” a third added.

“Pulisic is the United States’ most talented player ever but ultimately he’s a mental midget and serial loser. Phase him out and the USA can take the next step.”

“So much hate will be directed toward the keeper there but Christian Pulisic was absolutely pathetic today.”

“Pulisic couldn’t have had a worse match. Terrible touches, turnovers, then gets hurt kicking a dude’s foot instead of the ball annnnnd he’s out. Total bed s——-. At least he’s cashing in with like 10 different commercials right now. I never want to see his face again.”

Pulisic was also ripped for his reaction after the match, displaying a seemingly nonchalant attitude that USMNT fans were frustrated with prior to the start of the tournament, too. In an interview with GQ, the 27-year-old AC Milan winger largely downplayed the magnitude of being the star player for the USMNT in a World Cup on home soil.

“For me personally, it’s not like all that much is changing. It’s just another big tournament, to be honest. I get texts from my family and close friends—they’re definitely all excited about it, for sure,” Pulisic said.

“I feel like I’m constantly playing in big games. For me personally, it’s not like all that much is changing. It’s just another big tournament, to be honest. A lot of people are trying to make it even more than it is. I get it, it’s a huge tournament [shrugs]. I’m looking forward to it.”

Some fans argued that Pulisic was pulling a “nonchalant gimmick” — a popular term among soccer fans that describes players who, perhaps performatively, act unbothered or indifferent in an effort to appear cool and composed.

Pulisic’s postgame comments about his injury, which he described as being a sprained ankle, sparked similar accusations of being too casual about the gravity of the moment.

“I just twisted my ankle, just sprained my ankle. It’s just frustrating to end like that, of course, but now I have time to rest, so it’ll be okay,” Pulisic told Fox Sports after the match.

The USMNT were both thoroughly outclassed by Belgium and seemingly not prepared for the moment, as they put together their worst game of the 2026 World Cup in the 4-1 loss to Belgium.

Current USMNT captain Tim Ream is 38 years old, meaning this was more than likely his final World Cup. Thus, the USMNT is going to need to name a new captain, and based on the general opinion of his leadership skills, US fans will likely be hoping it’s someone other than Pulisic.
