Coleman Hawkins and Kansas State upset Hunter Dickinson and 16th-ranked Kansas during their college basketball game in Manhattan on Saturday. It was the seventh matchup between highly-paid fifth-year seniors.

The former owns the latter!

Hawkins, a former three-star recruit, played four seasons at Illinois. Dickinson, a former four-star recruit, began his college basketball career with three years at Michigan. They played once as freshmen, twice as sophomores and once as juniors. The Illini beat the Wolverines all four times!

At that point, Dickinson transferred to Kansas. His lucrative NIL deal was rumored to pay approximately $2 million per year for two years, but that number is unconfirmed.

Hawkins stayed at Illinois for his true senior year in 2023/24. The Illini did not play the Jayhawks during the regular season but they beat them during an exhibition game in October.

Fast forward to June. Coleman Hawkins entered the transfer portal and committed to Kansas State. The Wildcats are paying him approximately $2 million, about the same as Dickinson, for a one-year rental.

They meet again, now as bitter rivals!

Kansas beat Kansas State by 10 in Lawrence last month. Kansas State beat Kansas by eight in the Little Apple on Saturday. Hawkins finished with 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

Coleman Hawkins has played against Hunter Dickinson seven times in his career. He is 5-1 against him during the regular season and 6-1 including the exhibition. The Wildcats are on a five-game winning streak dating back to Jan. 25. They could sneak into the NCAA Tournament if they stay hot.

In the meantime, Hawkins is enjoying the rivalry win. He established his dominance over Dickinson during his postgame presser.

Coleman Hawkins has been subject to a lot of criticism this season because he is getting paid so much money for a fairly underwhelming result. Saturday had to feel good!
