Northern Oklahoma College-Enid defeated Fort Hayes Tech Northwest in the most lopsided college softball game I have ever seen. It got so out of hand that the box score doesn’t even make sense.
The Jets defeated the Tigers by 59 runs in only four complete innings.
Yes, you read that correctly. The college softball game finished with a final score of 59-0.
Northern Oklahoma College-Enid and Fort Hayes Tech Northwestern are on opposite ends of the standings.
To be completely honest, I was not previously familiar with either of these two schools. They are both two-year schools located right in the heart of the Great Plains.
Northern Oklahoma College is a public community college located in Tonkawa, Oklahoma with satellite campuses in Enid and Stillwater. The total enrollment hovers around 3,083 students. We are only going to talk about Enid, which is known as the “Wheat Capital” of the United States. It is the ninth-largest city in the state.
Fort Hayes Tech Northwest is a public technical college in Goodland, Kansas. It offers 19 different programs, ranging from diesel technology to cosmetology to precision agriculture and welding with a total enrollment of approximately 725 students. Goodland has a total population of less than 5,000.
Neither college softball team is very good this season but one is much better than the other.
The Jets of Northern Oklahoma College-Enid currently sit at 18-27 and 3-13 in the NJCAA Region II. The Tigers of Fort Hayes Tech Northwest are 1-42 overall without a single win in the KJCCC Division I.
It was already lopsided matchup when they took the field in Goodland over the weekend.
The score played out exactly how their respective records would suggest. Even worse, in fact!
The remaining college softball games were canceled.
Northern Oklahoma College-Enid traveled to Fort Hayes Tech on Sunday for a two-day double-header. They were scheduled to play each other twice in back-to-back days.
They played only one game on Sunday with a total recorded attendance of exactly zero…
The Jets scored 18 runs in the first inning to take an early lead. The Tigers were unable to get on the board in the bottom of the first. That trend continued for the next four innings before a mercy rule was put into effect. Game over.
The visitors went on to win the game by a score of 59-0. It was actually more, but the final inning was retroactively removed from the final result. It went like this:
- FIRST INNING
- Northern Oklahoma College-Enid: 18
- Fort Hayes Tech Northwest: 0
- SECOND INNING
- Northern Oklahoma College-Enid: 11
- Fort Hayes Tech Northwest: 0
- THIRD INNING
- Northern Oklahoma College-Enid: 6
- Fort Hayes Tech Northwest: 0
- FOURTH INNING
- Northern Oklahoma College-Enid: 24
- Fort Hayes Tech Northwest: 0
This is where things get confusing.
According to the official box score, the Jets finished with 65 total runs batted in on 54 hits with 10 walks— which obviously would not be possible if the game ended at 59-0.
How did they record more RBIs than runs scored? Great question.
I would imagine it has to do with the run rule, where the stats still count but the score but I cannot say for certain. There might also be some fudgery going on or the scorekeeper lost track. It was a disaster regardless of what happened. You can watch the replay here.
The Tigers committed 10 errors in total. Only two pitchers allowed all 59 runs and combined for only one strikeout. Woof. That’s a brutal day in the circle.
Northern Oklahoma College-Enid won so big that Fort Hays Tech decided to call it a series. Both teams agreed that it was not worth continuing. They canceled the remaining three games.
