Colorado defensive back and wide receiver Travis Hunter Jr. is likely going to be invited to New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony next month. However, he is no longer the Buffaloes’ only two-way college football player!
6-foot-3, 310-pound senior offensive lineman Tyler Brown is also going to play on the defensive line during this weekend’s game at Texas Tech.
As cool as it sounds, this move is not one that Deion Sanders and his staff wanted to make if they didn’t have to. It comes out of necessity. Colorado lost defensive end Dayon Hayes and defensive tackle Taurean Carter to season-ending injuries, and everybody on the roster (on every team) is dealing with some kind of ailment at this point in the year.
This is where Tyler Brown comes into the equation. The former Louisiana-Lafayette and Jackson State transfer played only offensive line throughout his entire college football career but has experience at defensive tackle dating back to high school in Mississippi. He even started a few games at right tackle and left guard for the Buffaloes as recently as last month.
However, Colorado recently employed a rotation at both offensive guard spots in the last few weeks. Brown is not in the game every time the offense is on the field.
That frees him up to spend time on the other side of the ball as well!
Just like Hunter, Brown rocked a grey jersey at practice all week. Typically, the offense wears black and the defense wears white— or vice versa. Grey indicates a mixture of the two.
Even though it is not ideal, the position change could be pretty cool. It is unlikely that he will see a lot of time on defense but Tyler Brown could, quite literally, block for Shedeur Sanders on one play and record a sack on the next. There are two two-way players in Boulder!
