The legal saga surrounding Washington Commanders linebacker Jamin Davis took a turn on Monday when a judge rejected a plea deal in his reckless driving case.

The incident in question dates back to March 28, 2022, when Davis was cited for driving his McLaren at an astonishing 114 mph in a 45-mph zone on Loudoun County Parkway at Evergreen Ridge Drive.

This charge carries the possibility of up to 12 months in jail and a fine of $2,500, according to Washington Post’s Nicki Jhabvala.

The district court, found Davis guilty of the offense and handed down a sentence that included 30 days in jail, a fine, and a suspended driver’s license.

Seeking to appeal the conviction, Jamin Davis missed practice on Monday in order to appear in Loudoun County Circuit Court.

Initially, Davis requested a jury trial for his appeal, but he later changed his stance and entered into negotiations with the commonwealth’s attorney’s office in Loudoun County. The proposed plea deal would have resulted in a maximum of eight days of active incarceration.

However, Judge Stephen E. Sincavage was not convinced that the proposed deal adequately addressed the severity of the offense.

The judge cited several factors that weighed against the plea agreement, including the heavily trafficked area in which Davis was caught speeding, the time of day the incident occurred, and Davis’s prior driving record, which he described as “Not terrible but not clean.”

With the plea deal rejected, the case is set to continue, and a status hearing has been scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday. This means that the linebacker’s legal team will need to regroup and plan their next steps in defending Davis against the reckless driving charge.

This is not the first time Davis has faced legal issues related to reckless driving. On December 19, 2021, he was previously charged with reckless driving for driving at 89 mph in a 65-mph zone. However, that charge was later reduced to an infraction, and Davis paid a $150 fine to resolve the matter.

Another notable NFL player was recently in trouble for speeding, Vikings rookie Jordan Addison was cited for driving 140-mph in a  55-mph zone.

Jamin Davis, a first-round draft pick in 2021, has shown promise on the field, but he needs to solve his off-the-field issues and re-focus on the upcoming season.
