Freshman phenom Cooper Flagg might be back at Duke again in 2025-26. Despite being the likely top overall pick, oddsmakers believe he’s leaning towards an NCAA return rather than testing out the NBA Draft.
If he ultimately chooses to do so, he could be missing out on a massive financial opportunity. Delaying his professional start could have a major impact.
Flagg surprised a number of fans when he made it clear that coming back for his sophomore season was a possibility as that No. 1 draft slot comes with a notable $11.5 million payout.
“I want to come back next year… I always wanted to play in college at the highest level and compete for a national championship.”
Not only would he be delaying that rookie deal but returning as a sophomore would push back his second contract, too. That could have even larger repercussions. Flagg would be eligible for the rookie max extension worth nearly $400 million over five years in 2029.
Oddsmakers believe Cooper Flagg will pass on a payday to return to Duke.
The latest odds show a return to the Blue Devils sitting around 3/1. The chances he’ll wind up with the Hornets, Wizards, or Jazz are nearly double that at +550. Other NBA teams fall further down the line.
NIL would have an impact on that decision, maybe making it easier to postpone that professional payout for another season longer. The latest On3 Sports valuation projects that value at just under $5 million.
Duke’s success in the NCAA Tournament could play a role, too. Should he accomplish each of his goals this year, it would make sense to take the next step.
Flagg has been non-committal on the topic of late. When asked about the NBA after this season’s home finale, he said he’s simply “living in the moment.”
Cooper Flagg has been college basketball’s top player. He led Duke in every major statistical category in Year 1. He’d likely be the top NBA pick if he chose to do so. Right now, the sportsbooks think he’ll stay put.
